Ensembles

Brazilian Band

Our Brazilian Band lies under the direction of Kurt Rassmusen, accomplished studio percussionist. This group revolves around learning and experiencing the culture of Brazil through their music of their carnavals. Students of this ensemble vary from all levels of experience however come together and perform all over the city and the university.

Steel Drum Band

The UNLV Steel Band performs music of many genres predominantly the music indigenous to Jamaica and Trinidad. Students will develop the ability and skills to play a variety of steel pans, percussion instruments and drum set.

Marimba Band

Students taking this course explore a variety of chamber music revolving around marimba including ragtime music, Mexican tunes, contemporary pieces, and African songs. This group has traveled and performed across the United States and overseas to places like Australia.

Percussion Ensemble

The objective in this class is to provide the student with a comprehensive knowledge of percussion ensemble literature and related rehearsal and performance techniques. Students are expected to play a variety of percussion instruments and music ranging from the standard orchestral instruments, ethnic percussion with a focus on Brazilian music, junk percussion and other invented instruments suitable for 20th Century style music (i.e: John Cage, Lou Harrison). Students will learn the techniques, music and related terminology to the various styles outlined above as assigned by the instructor. Although the class revolves largely around performance practices, certain historical aspects may be introduced from time to time. Possibilities to perform in public venues may be offered as opportunities are presented and as the ensemble promotes a professional attitude and standard of performing.
